What is H2S
Hydrogen Sulfide is a chemical compound with the formula H2S, this colorless, toxic and flammable gas is responsible for the foul odor of rotten eggs. H2S is a poison that can paralyze the breathing. It often results from the bacterial break down of the organic matter in the absence of oxygen, such as in swamps and sewers. It also occurs in volcanic gases, natural gas and some wells water. The odor of H2S is commonly misattributed to elemental sulfur; which is in fact odorless.
H2S is referred to the industry by a variety of names:
-
H2S.
-
Rotten - Egg Gas.
-
Sour Gas.
-
Hydro- Sulfuric Acid.
Flammability
Hydrogen Sulfide "H2S" is highly flammable, its flammability ranged from 4.4 % to 44 %, H2S is burning with blue flam and resulted SO2 which is toxic also.
Toxicity
Hydrogen Sulfide is considered a broad-spectrum poison, meaning that it can poisonseveral different systems in the body, although the nervous system is most affected. Exposure to lower concentrations can result in eye irritation, a sore throat and coughshortness of breath, and fluid in the lungs.Concentrations over 1000 ppm cause immediate collapse with loss of breathing, even aaafter inhalation of a single breath.
Safety
Hydrogen Sulfide is highly toxic and flammable gas; being heavier than air; it tends to accumulate at the bottom of poorly ventilated spaces. Although very pungent at first, it quickly deadens of sense of smell, so potential victims may be unaware of its presence until it too late.
